ORIGINAL McCLELLAN SADDLE AND OFFICER SADDLE STIRRUP STRAPS – MATCHED PAIRS IN VERY GOOD CONDITION – RARE OFFERING:  One of the more difficult components to find to complete your saddle, this is a rare offering of original McClellan Saddle and post-1920’s Officer Saddle stirrup straps.  Finding original full length stirrup straps of any pattern on the loose is almost impossible these days, so just that these make it to the market is remarkable in itself.  The only reason I am offering these sets is because I have a supply of original straps set back sufficient for my own needs for the foreseeable future.  This is not the sort of offering you’re likely to see again any time soon.

Each pair of straps is listed below with a full description and accompanying photographs.  These are the only stirrup straps I have for sale.

NO. 1  ORIGINAL MODEL 1904 McCLELLAN SADDLE STIRRUP STRAPS – FULL LENGTH AND IN VERY GOOD CONDITION:   Two original stirrup straps for the Model 1904 McClellan Saddles.  One of the strap tips is maker stamped and bears the inspector’s initials.

Both straps are full length, measuring 51 ½” long and 1 Ό” wide with no breaks, no heavy wear, and all of the stitching is intact.  These stirrup straps are in very good  condition.  (0824)  $275

NO. 2  ORIGINAL MODEL 1928 McCLELLAN SADDLE STIRRUP STRAPS:   Two original stirrup straps for the Model 1928 McClellan Saddles.

Both straps have been shortened to the length the soldier required, a practice that was quite common as the soldiers sought to remove unnecessary lengths of leather strapping from the saddle, bridle and the other horse equipment in order to reduce the chance of becoming fouled in the unused lengths of strapping.  Measuring 45” long and 1 Ό” wide with no breaks, no heavy wear, and all of the stitching is intact.  This is a very solid pair of stirrup straps which has survived in very good  condition.  (0825)  $250

NO. 3  ORIGINAL STIRRUP STRAPS FOR ANY OF THE POST WW1 OFFICERS SADDLES:   Two original stirrup straps for completing any of the post WWI officer's saddles.

This is a matched set in so far as these straps match in color and condition, and it is obvious they were used together on the same saddle.  Although the buckles are different patterns, this is not unusual to find as the stirrup straps were the first component of the saddle to wear out, and replacement of the straps by the company saddler was a routine repair.  A buckle was a buckle was a buckle, and they used what they had on hand.  I would not hesitate to use this pair to complete a saddle, as any matched set of original stirrup straps is difficult to find on the loose.

These stirrup straps are in remarkable condition, measuring 1 Ό” wide and 54 ½” long with no breaks, no heavy wear, and all of the stitching is intact.  (1208)  $175

NO. 4  ORIGINAL STIRRUP STRAPS FOR ANY OF THE POST WW1 OFFICERS SADDLES:   Two original stirrup straps for completing a Phillips, or any of the post WWI officer's saddles.  Both of the tips are date stamped from the Jeffersonville Quartermaster Depot - one 1921 and one 1940.

Although they are not a matched set in so far as to the date they were produced or the buckles which were used, these straps match in color and condition.  From all appearances they were used together on the same saddle, and I would not hesitate to use this pair to complete a saddle.  Stirrup straps were available from the Ordnance Department arsenals and Quarter Master Department supply depots, and no doubt replacement straps were to be had in the post stables and training facilities.  If an officer needed a replacement strap for his saddle and this pair was available, he wouldn't have been troubled by the difference in the buckles or the dates.

Both straps are 1 Ό” wide and both are full length - 55” and 59 ½” long respectively with no breaks, no heavy wear, and all of the stitching is intact.  These stirrup straps are in remarkable condition with both legible QMC stamps present.  (0329)  $275

NO. 5  ORIGINAL MODEL 1904 McCLELLAN SADDLE STIRRUP STRAPS – FULL LENGTH AND IN VERY GOOD CONDITION:   Two original stirrup straps for the Model 1904 McClellan Saddles.  Both straps are full length, with no breaks, no heavy wear, both have the sewn in standing loop and a sliding loop for securing the straps, and all of the stitching is intact.  These stirrup straps are in very good condition for completing your saddle.  (0124)  $250

NO. 6  REPRODUCTION McCLELLAN SADDLE STIRRUP STRAP – APPROPRIATE FOR MODELS 1859 – 1896 McCLELLAN SADDLES - FULL LENGTH AND IN VERY GOOD CONDITION:   This is a very well made reproduction McClellan Saddle Stirrup Strap which would be appropriate for any of the Civil War, Indian Wars, or Spanish American War McClellan Saddles – Models 1859 through 1896.

The strap is full length, measuring 57” long and 1 Ό” wide with no breaks, no sign of wear, and all of the stitching is intact.  The strap is fitted with a brass buckle with an iron tongue.

A good single stirrup strap to complete your saddle.  (0827)  $40

NO. 7  ORIGINAL MODEL 1928 McCLELLAN SADDLE STIRRUP STRAPS:   Two original stirrup straps for the Model 1928 McClellan Saddles.

Both straps are full length, measuring 51” long and 1 Ό” wide with no breaks, no heavy wear, and all of the stitching is intact.  This is a very solid pair of stirrup straps which has survived in very good  condition.  (0182)  $200
