SAVAGE REVOLVING FIREARMS COMPANY NAVY .36 CALIBER
REVOLVER – CIVIL WAR PRODUCTION – SCARCE MODEL RELIC –
CYLINDER RETAINS ALL SIX LOADS: Recently found
in an old Texas collection, this Savage Revolving
Firearms Company .36 caliber Navy Revolver has survived
years of exposure fully intact with the exception of the
loading lever and the wooden grips. Produced in limited
numbers from 1861 through the mid-1860’s, the majority
of these Savage Navy Revolvers were manufactured under
government contract, purchased by both the US Army and
Navy – the “Navy” designation referring to the caliber
and size of the revolver, rather than a specific
reference to the branch of service to which it was
issued. With a much lower production that the more
commonly encountered Colt and Remington revolvers of the
period, this relic Savage Revolver is indeed a scarce
offering.
Of special value in a relic, all six chambers of the
cylinder still retain the original loads.
With the exception of the loading lever, all of the
metal components are present with no missing or broken
pieces, and the while the cylinder will not rotate, the
hammer and trigger mechanism still functions, allowing
the hammer to be cocked with the ringed lever inside the
trigger guard, and “fired” by depressing the small
trigger at the top of the same lever. The handle of the
loading lever is gone, but the rammer head is still
present within the front of the frame and barrel swell.
The serial number is still legible on the side of the
grip frame, and the Savage Company patent information
and dates are legible on the top of the frame.
While any relic Civil War revolver is actively sought by
many collectors today, those which still retain the
original loads are particularly favored, as the loaded
cylinder may well indicate that they were lost in battle
or during some confrontation or engagement. Certainly
this historic Savage Navy “was there” and it will make a
very evocative addition to your collection. SOLD
