MODEL 1842 SPRINGFIELD MUSKET – MATCHING LOCK AND BARREL 1844 DATES – BRIGHT CARTOUCHE - SCARCE PRE-MEXICAN WAR PRODUCTION MUSKET IN VERY NICE CONDITION:   This Model 1842 Musket, was manufactured at the National Armory at Springfield in 1844, prior to the onset of the Mexican American War.  Having survived in very nice condition and showing little wear and no evidence of having been issued or carried on campaign, this Model 1842 Musket combines a high degree of condition with a production date well before the historic events unfolded with which it is most closely identified.

The lock and barrel bear matching date stamps – 1844 – and the balance of the lock and barrel stamps – the federal eagle, “SPRINGFIELD”, and the “V P” and eagle head are all present and legible.  The lock-trigger action functions with a “like new” crispness and the percussion cone is full form and is not peened from dry firing.   The metal is overall bright with very few aging spots and no pitting.  The bore is overall bright with no significant pitting or darkening.  No doubt that the metal has been cleaned during the course of  intervening 170 years since the musket was manufactured, but the edges are all sharp and the proper profiles in such areas as the beveled edge of the lock plate have been maintained in the original configuration.  The original full length ramrod is present.

The stock is in excellent condition with a bright legible cartouche and it retains much of the raised grain.  Featuring a beautiful rich even color throughout and crisp edges to the barrel and ramrod channels, there are no cracks or checks, and only a few minor handling marks.

This is an outstanding specimen of an early production Model 1842 Musket, and one of the scarce early examples that remarkably escaped heavy field use not only during the Mexican American War, but during the antebellum years on the frontier, and the heavy demand for arms during the American Civil War.  This musket will be a notable addition to your collection which would cover a large niche of the Springfield arms carried by Infantry soldiers during some of the more notable events in our nation’s history.  SOLD
