MODEL 1873 HAGNER ENTRENCHING TOOL – IDENTIFIED TO A 7TH
CAVALRY SOLDIER: One of the first of such tools
adopted by the army for issue to the individual soldier,
this Model 1873 Hagner Entrenching Tool is in excellent
condition and has the added value of being identified to
a soldier in what appears to be the 7th
Cavalry Regiment. The rear surface of the leather
covered scabbard is plainly hand lettered in ink or
paint “J. KELLEY, Co. I. 7 C.”, believed to
indicate, Company I, 7th Cavalry. The entrenching
tool has a like new handle, showing no wear and no
damage, chips or splits, and the wood is stamped “US”.
The blade is full form, has not been sharpened or
ground, no nicks, and the blade surface is overall
bright with only minor age spots. The scabbard,
complete with what is believed to be the original first
pattern, early leather belt loop, is likewise in
excellent condition with a complete seam and edge,
covered in bright, supple russet leather showing a
smooth shiny surface with no crazing or flaking, and
retaining a strong legible “US” stamp. This is an
overall excellent specimen of the Model 1873 Entrenching
Tool, with a nice historical identification, that would
be very difficult to upgrade.
