MODEL 1904 GERMAN SILVER STIRRUPS FOR THE
McCLELLAN SADDLE – VERY NICE MATCHED PAIR: A
very nice matched pair of US Army Model 1904 German
Silver Stirrups. These stirrups continue to be a bit of
mystery, known to have been introduced in 1904 based on
dated specimens, these attractive stirrups are first
pictured in the regulation description of the Model 1906
Whitman Officer’s Saddle and later described in the 1908
Ordnance Department Manual for Horse Equipments.
This pair is complete with the hard black rubber treads
and both stirrups are legibly stamped on the bottom of
the tread, “R.I.A. U.S.” and both dated 1909. Both
stirrups have an excellent, bright finish, and are full
form with no damage or misshaping from use. The rubber
treads show some wear to the top surface, but both are
intact and firmly in place.
This is a very nice set of fairly scarce US Army
stirrups that would definitely enhance the appearance of
your officer’s saddle, and although most closely
associated with the Model 1906 Officer’s Whitman Saddle,
depending on the individual officers’ preference, might
well have been used on any of the 20th
Century US Army officer’s saddles. (0226) $350
