CIVIL WAR ERA McCLELLAN SADDLE POMMEL SHIELDS –
NEW OLD STOCK - UNUSED: The kind of saddle part
that is only found in the few old, undisturbed
collections that still remain from the early 1900’s,
this bundle of Pommel Shields was found in the bottom of
a decaying cardboard box. Likely something that was
acquired at Bannerman’s famous surplus store many, many
years ago, this bundle of shields is still tied with the
original cord, probably the way they were shipped from
the shop where they were made.
These shields are of the same pattern and size as the
pommel shield listed under a separate listing on this
site (click
here to see this other listing). That other
shield was recovered from a relic Civil War era
McClellan Saddle which was found on Bannerman’s Island.
Instead of the normal seat size information – either the
size indicated in inches or by the numerals 1 through 4
– that shield was hand stamped “U.S.” and “T.J.
SHEPARD”, a known Civil War era government inspector.
Given the information on that shield, and that these
shields are packaged unmarked, it appears the shields
were provided to the saddle makers and were marked
either with the size or inspector’s information as they
were applied to the finished saddle.
These shields are full form, measuring 2” long and 1
5/8” wide. The brass has an even bright patina, and
they appear to have been lacquered at the time of
manufacture to prevent tarnishing in storage.
These are a rare Civil War era McClellan Saddle fitting,
and whether used to restore a missing pommel plate or
used in some other manner, these would be an interesting
addition to your saddle collection. (0125) $30 for
each plate
