19TH CENTURY
MEXICAN VAQUERO BRIDLE HARDWARE SET SILVER INLAYED
VERY NICE SCARCE SET:
This is a very nice example of the type of hardware
featured on the bridles used by the 19TH
Century Mexican Vaqueros or cowboys, and popular by
cowboys in the United States, particularly along the
border. The set is complete consisting of the buckle,
billet tip, standing loop, and two stud rosettes and
the set features genuine silver inlays, not German or
nickel silver, but coin quality silver. Relatively
scarce, especially as a complete set, this bridle set is
the sort of horse tack that did not survive in large
numbers as it was easily lost once the heavily used
bridles deteriorated.
This set is sized to accept
a 7/8 to 1 wide strap. The pieces are well made, all
still retain their original form and shape with no
bending or misshaping, and the iron base metal has
naturally aged to an even plum brown patina. There is no
significant pitting and overall the iron retains smooth,
even surfaces. The silver inlays are all intact with no
loss, and the silver pieces are chased with fine line
engraving.
Mounted on a leather,
braided rawhide or horsehair bridle, this set would be a
nice addition to any western bit collection,
particularly one acknowledging the significant
contributions of the Mexican Vaqueros. (0115) $250
