ORIGINAL CIVIL WAR
SPUR STRAPS – FULL LENGTH, UNISSUED, LIKE NEW – VERY
SCARCE SET:
From an old Eastern collection and virtually never found
on the loose, this pair of original Civil War issue
Enlisted man’s spur straps is in excellent condition and
have never been on a pair of spurs, much less issued or
used. Measuring the full 19” length as described in the
1861 Ordnance Manual, these straps have all of their
original surface finish, the standing loops are present
and intact, and the proper iron roller buckles as
described in the same manual have all of their black
japanned enamel finish intact. From the condition and
leather color it is obvious these two straps have been
together since the days of the War, however there is a
slight difference in the shape of the buckles. Either
the civilian contractor was using up two different lots
of buckles he had purchased or the straps originated
from two separate contractors. In either case, this
would have been of absolutely no concern to the army
when issuing the straps. Every trooper received “Pair,
spur straps – 1 each” and the unit’s Ordnance Sergeant
could not have cared less that the buckles were slightly
different shapes, and woe be the trooper dumb enough to
point out the difference. Not made of particularly
robust leather, these light straps passed over and under
the soldier’s boot and suffered hard use; therefore they
just didn’t survive the passage of time in great
numbers. Finding an unissued set like this pair is very
unusual, and will more than double the value of your set
of Model 1859 or Model 1872 Enlisted Man’s Spurs.
