MODEL 1870 DYER “E” POUCH CARBINE SLINGS -  VERY RARE EARLY INDIAN WAR ACCOUTREMENT:  Manufactured at Watervliet Arsenal, The Dyer “E” Carbine Cartridge Pouch was one of the cartridge pouches and boxes submitted for the 1870 Equipment Trials.  Easily the rarest of all of the Indian War period accoutrements, these trial accoutrements were produced at a rate of only 100 pieces of each type and the survival of these rare pouches is very low today.

As the Dyer “E” Pouch and Sling was intended to carry not only the carbine ammunition, but the carbine as well, suspended from a snap swivel, it was apparently anticipated that replacement slings would be needed as the slings provided in the original issue wore out.  A small quantity of these “E” Pouch slings were discovered when the last of the “good stuff” was cleaned off of Bannerman’s Island prior to its condemnation by the State of New York and these are the last of that small lot.

Whether you own the “E” pouch or not, this sling is a unique piece of the early Indian War era equipment, specifically developed for the soldiers on the post-Civil War Western Frontier, and would be an interesting piece to add to your collection.

I am fortunate to have more than one of these scarce slings to offer here.  Each is described below with accompanying photographs.

NO. 1  MODEL 1870 DYER “E” POUCH CARBINE SLING WITH THE VERY RARE CORRECT SNAP SWIVEL:  The sling is full form, measuring 1 5/8” wide, 74 ˝” long and is complete with both leather keepers, the two brass adjusting hooks and the brass frame adjusting buckle.  The leather surface of the sling is clear with no crazing or flaking and only minimal flexing in the expected areas where the sling would fold through the brass loops on the back side of the "E" Pouch.

Completing this sling is the snap swivel assembly which was unique to the Model 1870 "E" Pouch.  These snap swivels were modified from the existing stocks of surplus swivels which were used on the 2 1/2" wide Model 1841 and Model 1855 Carbine Slings.  The swivel yoke and roller were reduced in width to match the 1 5/8" wide sling.  These snap swivels were produced in very limited quantity as they were not expected to wear out at the same rate as the leather slings and today they are quite rare.  It is worth noting that the Model 1870 Snap Swivel is wider than the Model 1885 Carbine Sling Snap Swivel, which measures only 1 3/8" wide inside the yoke.

This is an excellent set and one that is seldom seen on the market, particularly with the correct snap swivel assembly.  (1008)  $550

NO. 2  MODEL 1870 DYER “E” POUCH CARBINE SLING SNAP SWIVEL - VERY RARE:  This is the snap swivel assembly which was unique to the Model 1870 "E" Pouch, and was continued in use for the complicated Model 1872 Cavalry Brace System with its integral carbine sling strap.

This is an excellent specimen of the early Indian War Trial Carbine Snap Swivel and one that is seldom seen on the market.  (1101)  $350
