HAGNER No. 2 CARTRIDGE BOX, .50/70 – MODIFIED FOR
CAVALRY USE: As shown and discussed on page 45
of Indian War Cartridge Pouches, Boxes and Carbine
Boots , by Dorsey, this Hagner No. 2 Cartridge Box
has been modified for use by the Cavalry by reversing
the positions of the closing tab and finial in order to
make the closing tab more accessible to the mounted
soldier.
This cartridge box is identical in every way
to the one shown in the above reference, to include the
iron burr used to attach the finial, with the exception
that this cartridge box has not been modified for the
.45/70 cartridge, but is still in the original
configuration for the earlier .50/70 cartridge. The
leather is in excellent condition with a smooth, shiny
surface, and a strong embossed “US” in the oval on the
face of the cover.
These cavalry modified Hagner boxes
are not common by any means, and they are truly
representative of the field modified equipment of the
Indian Wars period. $325
