US ARMY ARTILLERY OFFICERS’ DRESS SWORD BELT c.
1890-1940: As pictured on page 20 of
American Military and Naval Belts 1812-1902 by
Dorsey, this enameled leather belt featuring a gold
bullion overlay, was worn with the officer’s full dress
uniform. The three red silk stripes woven into the gold
bullion indicates this belt was worn by an artillery
officer.
The belt, measuring 38” long and 1 ¾” wide, is full
length and is very supple with no breaks or other
damage. The brocade is complete with no tears or wear
points, and in spite of some aging is still fairly
bright. The matching gold bullion and red silk keeper
is present and intact. The uniform protector is present
and full form with the gilt finished sword hanger loop,
and the belt plate catch is present. The post-1874
Pattern 1851 Sword Belt Plate, one of the easier plates
to find, would be the correct plate to add to this
belt.
Overall a nice example of the attractive dress belts of
the period.
