MODEL 1864 CIVIL WAR .58 RIFLE MUSKET CARTRIDGE
BOX – VERY NICE SPECIMEN: This is a very nice
Civil War Rifle Musket Cartridge box identified in Civil
War Cartridge Boxes by Johnson as a Type II, Pattern of
July, 1864. Manufactured by a civilian contractor, this
cartridge box is in very nice condition, retaining its
full form, with all seams intact and the leather very
supple, with a bright, shiny surface.
The outer cover
shows almost no evidence of wear with no crazing or
flaking, and with a strong legible “US” in the oval. In
the two lower corners of the front flap are the faint
outlines of both the maker’s cartouche and the US
Sub-inspector’s acceptance stamp. While these stamps do
not appear well in the photographs, they are discernable
to the naked eye. The inner flap and body surfaces also
feature nice, smooth leather with no loss of surface or
crazing. The “ears” or corner leather pieces normally
found on the inner flap have been removed from this
box. The work was neatly done with no sign of being
removed through use or damage, and were likely removed
by the soldier in order to provide himself with clear,
unfettered access to the cartridges. The belt loops and
closing tabs are present and complete with no breaks or
tears, and both of the original tin liners are present
inside the box. One of the buckles is missing, likely
lost in the course of use and apparently not missed, and
it is very possible this box was carried on the
soldier’s belt rather than a sling as was often done.
This is a very nice box, with a bright live finish.
