MODEL 1875 SINGLE ACTION HOLSTER – VERY RARE INDIAN WAR
HOLSTER: One of the most desirable Custer Era
Indian War accoutrements, the Model 1875 Holster is an
important addition to any collection. Manufactured at
Watervliet Arsenal, this pattern featured a body size
enlarged from the Model 1874 Holster, to provide a holster
large enough to carry either the Colt Model 1873 Pistol or
the Model 1875 Schofield Smith and Wesson Pistol.
This
specimen, one of the rare survivors of the extreme
conditions of the frontier, was modified by removing the
Hoffman Swivel belt loop attachment and replacing it
with the Belt Loop Modification of 1896, as documented
on pages 210-212, U.S. Military Holsters and Pistol
Cartridge Boxes by Meadows. This belt loop
modification, recognizable by the attachment with six
rivets, allowed the holster to be worn on and pass over
the double loop, 100 round, cartridge belts.
This Model 1875
Holster is in very good condition, with all of the
components present, to include the plug, and all of the
seams are intact. The “US” embossed on the body is
present and legible, and the tip of the flap still bears
the legible inspector’s stamp, “A.R. Smith”. The body
has an overall shiny finish with minor crazing and
flaking one expects to see on these well used holsters.
The belt loop has a smooth shiny surface. The flap is
crazed and has suffered some flaking, but is solid and
intact.
This is a very good specimen of an extremely
rare Indian War holster that documents the continued
issue, use and modification of the accoutrements of that
era.
