UNION METALLIC CARTRIDGE COMPANY GREEN LABEL BOX
OF .40 -2˝ INCH “STRAIGHT” CALIBER SHARPS RIFLE
CARTRIDGES – 10 ROUND UNOPENED BOX IN EXCELLENT
CONDITION: Also known as the .40–65 and the
.40-70 Sharps Straight (depending on the powder charge)
as introduced by Sharps in
March of 1876, this is a very collectable .40-2
˝ caliber Straight Sharps Rifle ammunition cartridge
box, bearing the desirable Union Metallic Cartridge
company green label.
The box is in excellent condition with a full, legible
cover label as can be seen in the photographs below, and
most importantly, the end label is still intact and has
not been split to open the box. The box is full form,
showing very little evidence of the normal wear and tear
to which these early boxes were subjected. The end
label is full form and completely legible with 100% of
the graphics present. The seams of both the lid and the
body are intact and the box holds its full form.
From the weight of the box, all ten of the original
cartridges are present and according to the labeling,
are loaded with the classic 330 grain paper patched
bullets.
Unopened specimens of these boxes are almost nonexistent
in the collector’s market and this is a particularly
nice specimen bearing the desirable Sharps Rifle
reference on the label. Difficult to find and seldom
offered for sale, this box will make a nice addition to
display with your rifle. (0906) $1250
