REMINGTON - UNION METALLIC CARTRIDGE COMPANY AMMUNITION BOXES –
PISTOL & RIFLE CARTRIDGES – SELECTION OF SOME NICE
SPECIMENS FRESH FROM SEVERAL OLD COLLECTIONS:
Acquired through the purchase of several old
collections, this is a very nice offering of late 1800’s
and early 1900’s Remington and Remington-UMC Cartridge
Company full,
partially full, and empty cartridge boxes for pistol and rifle
calibers.
Ranging from rare, to scarce, to some that are
relatively common, these are all solid specimens that
while showing various degrees of wear and age are
remarkable in that they have survived at all, and they
will be a nice addition to your collection to display
with your firearm.
Each box is individually described below and accompanied
by detailed photographs.

From the 1920's, this is one of the largest boxes
produced by Remington, measuring 6" long, 3" wide and
over 2" high. Containing all 50 of the original
cartridge cases with the
proper headstamp,
the box is fully intact with bright
clear legible labels. There are some clear tape
repairs to two corners, but the box is very solid, retaining
its shape with sharp edges, and there is no disfiguring or
crushing. A relatively scarce box, overall this is a
very nice specimen. (0329) $275

REMINGTON
- S.A.A.M.I. .30 REMINGTON EXPRESS PROOF CARTRIDGES - FULL BOX:
Dated 1957, this packet was
produced by the Remington Arms Company under the
standards of the Sporting Arms & Ammunition
Manufacturers, Inc. S.A.A.M.I., established in
1926, traces its history to a government project
predating WWI which sought to create an exchange of
technical information and standardizing of
interchangeability of ammunition and firearm
specifications between manufacturers. By the
1950's, S.A.A.M.I. had become an expert source regarding
technical product performance, safety, and product
interchangeability.
Based on the information included
in the label, this packet appears to be a loading of
proofing .30 Remington Express cartridges for testing in
Remington Arms Company firearms. The packet is
full form, and contains all 20 of the original
cartridges. The box features fully
legible labels on the face of the packet, on one side
panel and on one end flap. The packet is in
overall excellent condition, showing no abuse and only
very minor shelf wear. The packet is very solid,
retaining its shape with sharp edges, and there is no
disfiguring or crushing.
This is a very interesting packet,
representative of the efforts of the firearms
manufacturing industry to develop new designs and
produce safe firearms for their customers. (0738) $150

REMINGTON CALIBER .30
PRIMED CASES - FULL BOX - POSSIBLE MILITARY CONTRACT:
This box contains all 20 of the
original primed cartridge cases, bearing the headstamp
"R A 54" indicating these cases were produced in 1954.
The headstamp is a format used by Remington on the
ammunition they produced under military contract, and
combined with the khaki color of the paperboard from
which the box is made and the simple labeling printed
directly on the box, it is very possible this box was
produced for the military under contract, perhaps for a
special research project at the arsenals. The box is fully intact with
a bright
clear legible label, shows no wear or handling, and the
box retains
its shape with sharp edges, and there is no disfiguring or
crushing. This is an interesting loading and some
research might reveal its history. (0334)

WINCHESTER CARTRIDGES:
This is a Remington Arms Company produced box labeled as
"EMPTY CARTRIDGE CASES", part of their reloading
components line. The box contains 20 .45-60
Winchester Cartridges manufactured from cut down
Remington Peters .45-70 cartridge cases. The
cartridges are loaded with lead bullets, and based on
the label on the end flap, black powder. The man
from whom this box was acquired purchased a lot of
obsolete ammunition from the "Old West Scrounger"
ammunition company, and this box may have come from
them. The cartridges appear to be in excellent
condition and there is no sign of damage or wear due to
reloading. A comparison photo of the .45-60
cartridge is shown below alongside the longer .45-70,
showing that these .45-60 cases were reduced in length.
The box features very legible graphics on four sides of
the box proper, and on both end flaps. The box is solid,

its shape with some minor shelf wear. (0336) $50

REM 12 GA. "US GOVT
PROPERTY" CARTRIDGE BOX - EMPTY:
I
obtained this from an army veteran who had served in
post-war Germany in military government. He
related that the wildlife population had been
uncontrolled since before the war and the exploding
numbers were playing havoc with the crop production,
creating, or adding to the food shortages. Hunting
proved to be not only an effective management tool, but
also provided a source of recreation for the troops
assigned to the military government detachments.
He kept this box as a sample of the ammunition the
soldiers were issued for those hunts, noting it is
stamped "US GOVT PROPERTY" on the back panel. This empty box features
legible graphics on four sides of the box proper, and on
both end flaps.
The box is solid, and retains its shape with some shelf wear.
Not only is this an earlier Remington shot shell box,
but it has an interesting place in history.
