PETERS CARTRIDGE CO. AMMUNITION BOXES – PISTOL &
RIFLE CARTRIDGES – SELECTION OF SOME NICE SPECIMENS
FRESH FROM AN OLD COLLECTION: Found as a group
in an old, well established cartridge collection, this
is a very nice offering of late 1800’s and early 1900’s
Peters Cartridge Company full, partial and empty
cartridge boxes for pistol and rifle calibers.
In 1855, Joseph W. King established the Miami Powder
Company on the banks of the Little Miami River. In
1877, he sold that company and built the Great Western
Powder Works and the adjacent company town of Kings
Mills. King's son-in-law, Gershom M. Peters joined the
mill in 1881 and became president of the powder company
when King died in 1885. Peters formed the Peters
Cartridge Company at Kings Mills in 1887, incorporating
modern machinery and by 1889 the company reportedly was
manufacturing four-thousand cartridges per hour.
Remington Arms purchased the Peters Cartridge Company in
1934, expanding the facilities during World War II to
manufacture military ammunition. The war effort at the
plant ended in March of 1944, and Remington eventually
sold the Kings Mills factory to Columbia Records.
Ranging from rare, to scarce, to some that are
relatively common, these are all solid specimens that
while showing various degrees of wear and age are
remarkable in that they have survived at all, and they
will be a nice addition to your collection to display
with your firearm.
Each box is individually described below and accompanied
by detailed photographs.

any particular chronological order or with respect to

NO. 8 PETERS LABELED BOX - .32 SMITH
& WESSON BLANK CARTRIDGES – ca. 1920’S:
Manufactured for the .32 Smith & Wesson, I haven’t been
able to pin down the manufacture date of this packet,
but from the style of the printing and the content of
the wording, I suspect it dates no later than the
1920’s. The printing is applied directly to the box
rather than a paper wrapper. Both the top and both flap
ends are present and fully attached, with the only wear
to the packet being a slight tear at the thumbnail notch
on one side. The printed labeling is fully legible on
all six sides, showing only very minor wear and still
retaining the bright label coloring. The box is very
solid and retains its shape with sharp edges. This box
retains all fifty of the original cartridges. A very
nice specimen. (0125) $35
