the “big five” carbines of the war.

CIVIL WAR GALLAGHER CARBINE BRASS FOIL AND PAPER
CARTRIDGES: Believed by some to be one of
the earlier cartridges for the Civil War Gallagher
Carbine, this is an excellent example of the Gallagher
Brass Foil and Paper Cartridge. Considerably more
fragile, resulting in a lower survival rate than the
solid brass bodied cartridges, these brass foil paper
wrapped cartridges were one of the forms of ammunition
developed and issued during the Civil War for one of the
“big five” carbines of the war. As with all of the
Civil War paper cartridges, these are becoming more
difficult to find in decent condition. I have the
following specimens available:
NO. 1
GALLAGHER CARBINE BRASS FOIL AND PAPER CARTRIDGE: The cartridge body is
complete, in full form, with the lead bullet firmly
attached. There is a minor rub spot on the throat
of the paper wrapper, but the cartridge
is not weakened nor made fragile. This is still a prime example of this scarcer
version of the Gallagher cartridges. (1030) $85

NO. 2
GALLAGHER CARBINE BRASS FOIL AND PAPER CARTRIDGE: The cartridge body is
complete, in full form, with the lead bullet firmly
attached. This cartridge was glued to a display
board and removing it caused some loss of the surface of
the paper wrapper on only one side. The cartridge
is not weakened nor made fragile by this loss, it
resulting in more of a cosmetic loss to the one side
rather than structural. The opposite side retains
the full surface of the wrapper and is in excellent
condition. This is still a prime example of this scarcer
version of the Gallagher cartridges. (0828) $75

CIVIL WAR GALLAGHER CARBINE BRASS CARTRIDGE:
An excellent, like new example of the Civil War
Gallagher Carbine Brass Cartridge. The cartridge body is
complete, in full form, with the lead bullet firmly
attached, and showing no signs of wear or age due to
storage. This is a prime example of the Gallagher
cartridge, which like all the Civil War ammunition is
becoming more difficult to find in decent condition. We
have a few of these in stock and will select the best
specimen from those on hand. (0828) $75

CIVIL WAR GALLAGER CARBINE CARTRIDGE PACKET –
COMPLETE LABEL, FULL FORM: An original
Civil War Gallagher Carbine Cartridge paste board packet
which contained ten of the metallic cartridges
specifically produced for the Gallager Carbine.
Although there are no cartridges with this packet, this
packet features the full, legible label on the
front of the packet, the original pull string intact and
present, and the packet retains its full form with no
split seams or loss of the paper wrapping. The printed
label reads, “10 Poultney’s Metallic Cartridges;
Patented December 15th, 1863 with 12 caps,
for Gallager’s Breech Loading Carbine, 50/100 Calibre”.
It appears this box was opened with knife or similar
instrument, by carefully cutting around three sides of
the label in order that the soldier could remove the
cartridges but still retain the box for carrying the
remaining rounds in his pocket. These Civil War
cartridge packets are becoming more and more difficult
to find in any condition and finding one with a complete
label is very unusual. This is a nice piece to add to
your Civil War Carbine display. $150
