WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS COMPANY .45-70
GOVERNMENT FACTORY CARTRIDGE CASE DRAWS: These
two partially formed .45-70 cartridge cases were
identified in the collection of the previous owner as
being produced by Winchester Repeating Arms Company.
Although the one piece with a fully formed base is not
headstamped, it does have the characteristics – the
raised ring and large primer pocket – of one of the
Winchester .45-70 cartridge designs of the late 1800’s
(see comparison photograph below)
These Cartridge Case Draw Samples were displayed at
trade shows and given out as souvenirs and were part of
the traveling sales representatives’ sample kits used
when they visited gun shops and retail outlets.
The one draw has the cartridge case length and the
beginnings of the primer pocket formed and the second
piece has the primer pocket and fully formed head with
the rim.
These are far from common and would be an interesting
addition to a Winchester Repeating Arms collection or to
display on a Winchester cartridge board. (0761) $50
