CIVIL WAR ERA .58 CALIBER PAPER CARTRIDGES FOR THE RIFLE MUSKET - VERY NICE SPECIMENS:  These are individual collector quality .58 caliber paper cartridges loaded with the Minie Ball or Bullet, as were issued with the Models 1855 - 1863 Rifled Muskets.

I have the following cartridges in stock, and each is listed and priced individually below with accompanying photographs.

No. 1  .58 CALIBER PAPER CARTRIDGE FOR THE RIFLE MUSKET - DISPLAYED IN A RIKER MOUNT:  A very nice, ready made display piece, this is an excellent, complete .58 caliber Rifle Musket Paper Cartridge as issued with the Models 1855-1863 Rifle Muskets, protected in a Riker display mount.  The glass front to the display bears the printed banner, "CIVIL WAR CARTRIDGE".

The paper wrapper of the cartridge is very solid with no holes, or tears.  There is a hand written notation on the cartridge "58 C.W. Musket 1855 Springfield".   The folded tail is full form and the thread tie at the point of the bullet is intact.  This is an excellent piece to display with your Civil War era rifle musket.   SOLD  (see No. 2 below)

No. 2  .58 CALIBER PAPER CARTRIDGE FOR THE RIFLE MUSKET - DISPLAYED IN A RIKER MOUNT:  A very nice, ready made display piece, this is an excellent, complete .58 caliber Rifle Musket Paper Cartridge as issued with the Models 1855-1863 Rifle Muskets, protected in a Riker display mount.  The glass front to the display bears the printed banner, "CIVIL WAR CARTRIDGE".

The paper wrapper of the cartridge has been reinforced with small pieces of original cartridge wrapping paper at a point on one side of the base of the cartridge where the paper had worn through.  A number of these cartridges were recovered from the leather cartridge boxes and they had suffered some wear due to being carried in the soldier's boxes.  The cartridge is now very solid with no other holes, or tears, and the repair is limited to the one side which does not show when displayed in the riker mount.  The folded tail is full form and the thread tie at the point of the bullet is intact.  This is an excellent piece to display with your Civil War era rifle musket at a very good price.   (0368)  $65

No. 3  .58 CALIBER PAPER CARTRIDGE FOR THE RIFLE MUSKET:  A very nice, complete .58 caliber Rifle Musket Paper Cartridge as issued with the Models 1855-1863 Rifle Muskets.  The paper wrapper is very solid with a very small pin hole at the base where the tail of the cartridge folds over the base.  The folded tail is full form and the thread tie at the point of the bullet is intact.  Overall this is a very nice specimen to display with your Civil War era rifle musket.  SOLD

No. 4  58 CALIBER SKIN CARTRIDGE – SCARCE:  In comparison to the paper cartridges, few of these fragile skin cartridges survive today in collections.  The “skin” tube is a piece of animal gut was treated with nitrates in order that it burned when the cartridge was fired.  The tube was glued around the base of the bullet and filled with the powder.  The entire cartridge was then varnished to harden it and protect it from moisture.  The material itself and the mode of manufacture did not enhance the survival of these cartridges and subsequently they are scarce today.  This specimen is complete and undamaged with the bullet, tube and powder intact.  (0530) $85
