.45/70 LINE THROWING GUN CARTRIDGES – FULL PACKET
AND SINGLE CARTRIDGES: These cartridges were
produced for the .45/70 Trapdoor Rifles that were
modified to use as line throwing guns for the US Navy
and Coast Guard. Designed to fire a harpoon like
projectile, these guns were used to fire a line from one
ship to another to establish a link to transfer supplies
or personnel, or to someone adrift in the ocean in order
to affect the rescue. One of the last
cartridges ordered by the US Military for the .45/70
Trapdoor guns and while the line throwing gun cased sets
still surface on a fairly regular basis, these
cartridges are normally missing from the sets.
The individual
cartridges and full packets currently in stock are
individually described below, accompanied by
photographs. |

from handling, and no damage or misshaping, retaining
legible labels on both sides of the box. The

produced by Remington-Peters. Identical packets
have been reported to be date stamped in ink with dates
in the late 1970's. The cartridges are in

No. 2 PACKET OF
.45-70 LINE THROWING "LIGHT" CARTRIDGES - NAVAL COMPANY
- POSSIBLE WORLD WAR TWO VINTAGE:
A partial packet of Line Throwing Cartridges
manufactured by the Naval Company of Doylestown,
Pennsylvania, this packet is made of red paper card
stock and is ink stamped on both sides of the box with
the maker information rather than having the label
printed on the box. The box is also repeatedly stamped
"LIGHT LOAD" indicating it was for a shorter distance,
or perhaps was used for training which may explain the
red box color rather than the normally encountered white
box. Showing some use, the box is still in very
good condition showing only minor wear and still
retaining the full form. The box retains 12 cartridges
with mixed headstamps but all bearing dates in the
1950's. The cartridges were loose in this box when I
acquired it, so in order to protect the cartridges, I
placed them in a foam cartridge tray which is not
original to the box. Still, this is another good
packet for your display and the first of these in red
that I have encountered.
