PERCUSSION CAP TINS FOR  MUSKETS, RIFLES, AND REVOLVERS - COLTS, REMINGTONS, ETC:  These desirable Eley, Winchester, Goldmark, Remington, and UMC Percussion Cap Tins are actively sought after to complete cased sets for the various Percussion Pistols and to display with percussion rifles and muskets.

I have the tins listed below, each separately described with accompanying photographs.

NO. 1    J. GOLDMARK  PERCUSSION CAPS  - MARKETED BY WINCHESTER - EARLY BRASS TIN AND BLUE LABEL - SEALED AND IN "LIKE NEW" CONDITION:  Fresh from an old collection and found in a full ten-tin wrapper (see next listing) these Goldmark Percussion Caps were packaged and marketed under the Winchester Repeating Arms Co. label.  Intact with the complete fully legible, clean top label and the complete, legible and unbroken side label band, this tin features the early light blue labels and the address does not include the country of origin, indicating these were from an earlier production run.  Also indicative of any earlier production is the tin is made of brass rather than the later iron alloy.   The tin is full form with no damage and it presumably contains all the original caps.  I have very few of these.  (0209)  $100

NO. 2   WINCHESTER LABELED ROLL PACKAGE FOR EARLY BLUE LABEL BRASS TINS OF GOLDMARK'S PERCUSSION CAPS - RARE DISPLAY PIECE:  Fresh from an old collection and found with all ten brass percussion cap tins (see listing above) this wrapper is the sort of thing that seldom survived.  Made of lightweight paper and subject to poor storage and heavy handling through the years, very few of these wrappers survived.  After the cap tins were removed, I reformed the wrapper around two large dowels and resealed the seams and tattered areas to restore the wrapper to its original shape.

Showing a little wear as is expected, the wrapper presents very well and the label retains its legible printing in spite of being a little tattered around the edges.  This would be a great piece to display in a variety of collections and groupings to illustrate how the cap tins were wholesaled and marketed.  This is the first one of these wrappers I've ever seen and I can't imagine many of them survived intact.  (0222)  $75

NO. 3   LARGE PERCUSSION CAP TIN  - WORN CONDITION BUT STILL RETAINING MOST OF THE CAPS - GOOD FRONTIER APPEARANCE:  Measuring 1 ¾” tall and 1 ½” in diameter, this cap tin is much larger than the tins normally encountered.  This was probably the size sold in the gun shops and mercantile shops that serviced the trails and roads leading onto the frontier where supplies were purchased in quantities in anticipation of not being near another source for some time.  This tin is almost three times the size of the normally encountered tins and probably held 250-350 caps when it was new.

The label has suffered some loss and wear, but there is still enough of the text surviving to determine that this tin was probably marketed after the Civil War but early enough in the post-war years when the surplus revolvers, carbines and muskets made up the majority of the firearms on the frontier.

The tin does have some surface corrosion, but the metal is solid without any weak spots.  The lid is full form and is easily removable.  The tin retains its paper liner, used to cushion the caps, and the tin is approximately 2/3 full of what appear to be the original caps.

Worn and looking a little tired from the passing years, this tin still survives in solid condition and it has a "been there, done that" rugged frontier used appearance.  (0231)  $65

NO. 4  UNION METALLIC CARTRIDGE COMPANY PERCUSSION CAP TIN:  Complete with a full legible label and both upper and lower sections of the tin, this has survived in very good condition.  The tin contains a quantity of the original caps and is full form with no damage. SOLD

NO. 5    J. GOLDMARK  PERCUSSION CAP TIN - MADE BY WINCHESTER:  Complete with the label and both upper and lower sections of the tin, this tin was manufactured by the Winchester Repeating Arms Co. under the Goldmark patent.   The green label is complete but has a stain on the lower right side of the paper.  The edge label is present on the tin lid.  The tin contains eleven of the original caps.  The tin is full form with no damage.  (0249)  $30

NO. 6  HICK'S PERCUSSION CAP TIN:  Complete with a full legible label and both upper and lower sections of the tin, this Hick's Percussion Cap Tin, manufactured by the Union Metallic Cartridge Company, has survived in very good condition.  The tin contains a quantity of the original caps.  The tin is full form with no damage. (0705) $30

NO. 7 UNION METALLIC CARTRIDGE COMPANY PERCUSSION CAP TIN:  Complete with a full legible label and both upper and lower sections of the tin, this has survived in very good condition.  The label has some staining, but the company name and information is still legible.  The tin contains a quantity of the original caps and is full form with no damage. SOLD
