UNION METALLIC CARTRIDGE COMPANY GREEN LABEL BOX
OF .44 -2 ¼ INCH CALIBER SHARPS RIFLE CARTRIDGES – 10
ROUND BOX IN EXCELLENT CONDITION: Also known as
the .44 - 77 Sharps as introduced by Sharps in
1875, this is a very
collectable .44-2 ¼ caliber Sharps Rifle ammunition
cartridge box, bearing the desirable Union Metallic
Cartridge company green label.
The box is in excellent condition with a full, legible
cover label as can be seen in the photographs below.
The box is full form, and while it has been opened, it
shows very little evidence of the normal wear and tear
to which these early boxes were subjected. The end
label has been cut to facilitate opening the box, with
some loss of content, but the majority of the end label
is present. The seams of both the lid and the
body are intact and the box holds its full form.
All ten of the original cartridges in the box - full,
complete loads, holding the classic 405 grain paper
patched bullets, and all featuring the early UMC style
raised ring around the large Berdan primer. The
original wrapping paper is present in between the
cartridges.
This is an excellent specimen of a fairly scarce full
packet of the .44-77 cartridges – far less common than
the .40 and .45 cartridges - bearing the desirable
Sharps Rifle reference on the label. Due to the
popularity of this cartridge, these packets of .44-77
were apparently consumed at a higher rate and they do
not appear on the collector market very often
–
particularly in the ten round packets. This box will
make a nice addition to display with your rifle.
