E. REMINGTON & SONS ca. 1874-1880 .45-70 TWENTY
FIVE ROUND SQUARE BOX – SCARCE EARLY PRODUCTION:
This twenty five round, square box is quite possibly the
earliest production of cartridges by the E. Remington
Arms Company for the newly introduced .45-70, or as
stated on the label call out, the “U.S. .45 Cal. Rifle
Musket”. The style of the box, the black printing on
the plain khaki paper and the “E. Remington & Sons”
company name strongly suggests this box was produced in
the first five to six years the cartridge was in use on
the frontier. The early Remington cartridge headstamp
also used the same “E. REMINGTON & SONS” format.
This empty two piece box retains a complete, fully
legible top label and one side of the lid is printed
with “SOLID HEAD”, referring to the style of cartridge
case. The body of the box exhibits signs of age and
wear, and the edges have been carefully restored. The
box retains its original dimensions and it presents well
for display.
Considerably scarcer than the UMC, Winchester and even
the Sharps Company cartridge boxes of the same period,
this early Remington box would be a very nice addition
to display with an early Remington No. 1 Rifle from the
buffalo hunt period.
