UNION METALLIC CARTRIDGE COMPANY GREEN LABEL BOX
OF .40 -2 ¼ INCH “NECKED” CALIBER SHARPS RIFLE
CARTRIDGES – 10 ROUND BOX IN EXCELLENT CONDITION:
Also known as the .40–70 Necked as introduced by Sharps
in 1876, this is a
very collectable .40-2 ¼ inch caliber Bottlenecked
Sharps Rifle ammunition cartridge box, bearing the
desirable Union Metallic Cartridge company green
label.
The box is in excellent condition with a full, legible
cover label as can be seen in the photographs below, and
the end label still retains the majority of its form in
spite of this packet having been opened. The box is
full form, showing very little evidence of the normal
wear and tear to which these early boxes were
subjected. The seams of both the lid and the body are
intact and the box holds its full form.
All ten of the original cartridges are present and
according to the labeling, are loaded with the classic
330 grain paper patched bullets.
This earlier style of UMC label without the cartridge
picture, and bearing the desirable Sharps Rifle
reference on the label, does not appear on the collector
market very often, and this box will make a nice
addition to display with your rifle.
