MODEL 1855 ENLISTED MAN’S BRASS SHOULDER SCALES:
Introduced with the Enlisted Uniforms in 1851, these
brass shoulder scales were initially intended only for
mounted troops, but in 1854 they were adopted for all
enlisted men.
This set matches perfectly in condition,
the color of the patina, and the set of the scales as
they would have been worn, and definitely have been
together for a very long time. However, one is made in
the early pattern with individual scales riveted to a
central bar, while the other is stamped from a single
sheet of brass and marked “Horstmann – Philadelphia”.
It is very likely that during the Civil War when many of
these scales were issued, little attention was paid to
ensuring each soldier received a “matched” pair, rather
they were issued two and had to make do.
Still this is
a very nice set, showing some use and evidence of wear
unlike most of these that never saw service, but both
are in very good condition with no damage, excessive
dents, and featuring a beautiful, soft uncleaned
patina. This set will be an effective addition to your
display. (0250) $150
