ORIGINAL REGIMENTAL NUMBERS AND COMPANY LETTERS
USED ON THE CIVIL WAR KEPIS AND THE INDIAN WARS MODEL 1872 US ARMY FORAGE CAP OR KEPI:
As used to designate the soldier’s regiment and company,
these are the original
Letters and Numerals were the unit identity insignia
worn on the Civil War era Kepis and the later Indian War
Model 1872 Forage Caps. Affixed to the crown or
front of
the soldier’s hat, the numbers were attached above the
intersection of the crossed sabres, rifles or cannons
and the letter was attached below the intersection. These are old, original
stock, in excellent condition and they have the attaching
wires or loops present on the reverse. These letters and
numerals are getting increasingly difficult to find, and
they will be
nice additions to your Indian War uniform and
equipment collection.
