PATTERN 1872 FORAGE CAP OIL CLOTH COVER – SCARCE EXAMPLE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION:  As pictured on page 49 of Langellier’s HATS OFF, Head Dress of the U.S. Army, 1872-1912, this Oilcloth Cover for the Pattern 1872 Forage Cap has survived the years in excellent condition.

Showing little signs of use or wear, this cover retains 98% of the applied finish to the oilcloth.  Sensitive to poor storage, extremes of temperature, and dry rot, this material seldom survives in any condition at all, and that this example survived in the excellent condition that it has is remarkable.  All of the seams are intact, both wire hooks for attaching the cover to the forage cap are present, and the material retains a soft, pliable texture.  The only loss of the oilcloth finish is confined to pin-sized points that are only visible if the cover is held up to a bright light.  Otherwise the finish retains its original black shiny surface.

This is a scarce offering and of such a quality that it would be a notable addition to any Indian Wars era uniform collection.  SOLD
