MODEL 1902 ENLISTED MAN’S SERVICE CAP (COTTON
KHAKI) – w/ 5TH CAVALRY CAP BADGE:
Adopted at the beginning of the 20th Century,
the Model 1902 Dress and Service Caps introduced a basic
style of military headwear which would continue in
service through to the present time with only minimal
changes. In service for only ten years, the series of
Model 1902 Caps were soon replaced by the Model 1912
Cap. In addition to the short service life of the Model
1902 Caps, the army was quite small at the time,
resulting in a very low number of the 1902 caps being
produced, and both of these factors contribute to these
caps being fairly scarce in the modern collector’s
market.
Featuring a tightly belled crown, this Model 1902
Enlisted Man’s Service Cap is in extremely nice
condition, still holding its shape very well and showing
only the slightest sign of wear and age. The cotton
khaki crown is full form, still retains a nice even
color with no significant soiling, and is fully intact
with no damage or open seams.
The cap features a subdued finish badge identifying the
soldier as being assigned to Troop A of the 5TH
Cavalry Regiment. The proper subdued finish is fully
intact with no wear or misshaping.
The enameled black leather visor is full form and
retains an even color with some minor wrinkling to the
surface. The black leather chin strap is intact and
shows no wear, held in place by the two subdued-finish
service eagle buttons.
The leather sweat band
still retains its russet color, showing little evidence
of wear, is fully attached, and still retains the size
label at the back of the cap. The sweat band bears the
embossed stamping “1 S.C.N.Y.” which is likely a unit
issue inventory identification.
This is a very respectable example of the fairly scarce
Model 1902 Enlisted Man’s Khaki Service Cap which was
worn with the khaki service uniform in warm or tropical
environments.
