1874-1917 MESS UTENSIL SET LEATHER SCABBARDS:  Introduced with the Model 1874 Infantry Equipment, these Model 1874 Russet Buff Leather Scabbards were provided for the mess utensils – knife and fork - and they continued in use through World War One.  These leather scabbards were made up by the arsenals from scrap leather to keep the utensils from tearing the haversacks and saddlebags, and from all appearances were considered to be a disposable item, so they survive in limited numbers.  Once fairly common, these sets of scabbards have disappeared from the market, and are seldom encountered any more, especially as a full set.

I  have the following scabbards shown below, including two very rare arsenal marked matching sets.

NO. 1  MESS UTENSIL SCABBARD:  An original 1874-1917 Mess Utensil Scabbard for the fork.  As with all of these collectibles, eventually the existing stocks are exhausted and have disappeared into individual collections.  These fork scabbards are in excellent unissued or lightly used condition, the leather is pliable, all the seams are intact, and they will be a good addition to your mess utensil sets.  As the fork scabbards are the same width as the knife scabbards, a pair of these fork scabbards will work for the knife and fork set.  While they last, $20 each

NO. 2  MESS UTENSIL SCABBARD SET - MARKED "US":  An original 1874-1917 Mess Utensil Scabbard Set for the fork and knife.  The fork scabbard is stamped "US" with the same style of stamp as was used on the early post-Civil War accoutrements made at the arsenals.  These marked examples are very rare, and having had literally hundreds of these scabbards through the years, this pair and the one listed below are the only two sets I have found with markings.  I have kept this set in my collection for years, but its time to let it go on to someone else.  The scabbards are in "like new" unissued condition, very clean pliable leather with all the seams intact and in full form.  This set of scabbards will be a a very special addition to your mess utensil set.   SOLD

NO. 2  MESS UTENSIL SCABBARD SET - MARKED "RIA 1906":  An original 1874-1917 Mess Utensil Scabbard Set for the fork and knife.  The fork scabbard is ink stamped "RIA" for Rock Island Arsenal, and dated 1906.  These marked examples are very rare, and having had literally hundreds of these scabbards through the years, this pair and the one listed above are the only two sets I have found with markings.  This is a particularly interesting set as the arsenal date stamp confirm just how late they were manufactured at the arsenals.  I have kept this set in my collection for years, but its time to let it go on to someone else.  The scabbards are in "like new" unissued condition, very clean pliable leather with all the seams intact and in full form.  This set of scabbards will be a a very special addition to your mess utensil set.   (0603)  $75
