CIVIL WAR MESS CUP – VERY NICE SPECIMEN:
This is a very good specimen of the classic standard
issue Civil War soldier’s tin plated cup, characterized
by the handle being wire edged and the wires being used
to secure the handle to the top rim of the cup.
Measuring 4 ¼" in diameter and 3” high, this cup is in
full form with tight seams, and no misshaping or dents.
The cup shows evidence of having been issued and used by
a soldier in the field, but it survived the years in
very solid condition. The surface of the metal is
overall smooth and the tin plating is still intact and
darkened to a pleasing patina as is typical on these old
cups.
Proper to hang on your McClellan saddle, or with your
canteen or haversack, there is no doubt in my mind this
cup is a genuine Civil War veteran and overall is a very
strong example of an item that has all but disappeared
from the collector’s market.
