MODEL 1917 MOUNTED CANTEEN – SCARCE MODEL 1910
FLAT TOP CANTEEN - UNIT ID’d: This very nice,
complete Model 1917 Mounted Canteen includes several
desirable features. The canteen in this set is the
fairly scarce early “flat top” Model 1910 Canteen that
has the early pattern screw cap with the flat top
surface as opposed to the later dome shaped cap. The
top of the cap of the canteen carries the unit applied
identification “1ST MASS F. A.” for the 1st
Massachusetts Field Artillery. The cap is also stamped
“G. E. B.” and the canteen cup carries the same initials
– likely the initials of the soldier to whom this set
was issued, and evidence that this set has been together
since the days it was issued and the these pieces are
all original to each other. This information might be
sufficient information to identify the soldier and fully
research his service record.
The cover is in very clean condition with no tears, wear
or other damage, and still retains a legible “US” on the
front. The lift the dot snaps still retain their
original blackened finish, and both are complete,
function well and show no signs of tearing around the
snaps as is often the case. Both of the flaps bear
legible maker’s ink stamps showing this cover was made
by the Perkins Campbell Company in 1917. The canteen
and cup are both full form with no significant dents and
no cracks or other defects and the handle on the cup
functions properly. The original leather suspension
strap is full length and is complete with all the
hardware. The strap has some surface crazing, but is
still strong and supple.
This set is has a nice combination of being unit
identified and including the early pattern of the Model
1910 Canteen, and makes for a very nice example of the
Model 1917 Mounted Canteen.
