CIVIL WAR MESS CUP – VERY GOOD SOLID SPECIMEN:
This is a very good specimen of the classic standard
issue Civil War soldier’s tin plated cup, with this
specimen being a taller version.
Measuring 5" high and 4” in diameter, this specimen is a
taller than the more common 4” high cups. This cup is
in full form with tight seams, no misshaping, and only
some light minor dents from handling or storage. The
cup, if issued, was subjected to very little use and it
survived the years in very solid condition. The surface
of the metal is very smooth with only very minor pitting
on the outside surface of the bottom. The cup has an
even color overall and much of the original tin plating
remains with a nice patina.
Proper to hang on your McClellan saddle, or with your
canteen or haversack, this is the type of cup in which
the soldiers prepared their coffee or one-cup meals.
There is no doubt in my mind this cup is a genuine Civil
War veteran and overall is a very strong example of an
item that has all but disappeared from the collector’s
market.
