MODEL 1888 SPRINGFIELD TRAPDOOR CARBINE AND RIFLE
FRONT SIGHT HOODS: Original Model 1888
Springfield Trapdoor Carbine and Rifle Front Sight
Hoods, developed as an alternative to the Model 1884
Sight Hoods. Heavy and expensive to manufacture due to
the required machining and the attaching screw, the 1884
hoods were replaced with the lighter and less expensive
1888 Sight Hoods which were manufactured of spring steel
and simply snapped over the front sight. The hood has
two slots, one on each side of the hood, that engage the
base of the front sight when the hood is snapped in
place. These hoods, provided to the troops on a special
request basis from their officers, were designed to
protect the front sight from damage or misalignment. A
nice accessory to add to your Trapdoor Rifle or Carbine
