ORIGINAL THREE PIECE CLEANING ROD SETS FOR THE
MODEL1877 - 1890 SPRINGFIELD TRAPDOOR CARBINE - VERY NICE
SETS: As issued with the Springfield Model
1877 – 1890 Trapdoor Carbine. I've been
fortunate to locate several of these complete sets in
spite of them becoming increasingly difficult to find on
the loose. All are very good to excellent sets to
complete your carbine and they are listed individually
below with accompanying photographs and descriptions.

SET No. 1: This original set of the
three piece cleaning rod is in excellent condition,
showing little sign of age and no use. All three
sections are full length with clear threads. There
is no pitting on the three sections - obviously
a matched set and not assembled from loose sections.
This is an excellent set, much better than has been
available on the market for some time. SOLD

SET No. 2: This original set of the three piece
cleaning rod is in very nice condition with a unique
soldier executed modification.
While all three pieces are full length with clear
threads on the upper two sections, the lower section has
been ground to a point. Although the threads have
been eliminated in the sharpening process, enough of the
thread lines are still visible to show that this rod
section was not shortened in the process and the point
is limited to the threaded area only. It appears
that a frontier soldier took it upon himself to exercise
a little ingenuity and in addition to having a cleaning
rod for his carbine, he now also had a spit on which to
roast whatever small game he managed to forage for his
evening supper. This is a very unusual
modification and one that is a great example of how the
soldiers adapted the issued equipment to suit their
needs. The upper section has some light surface
pitting, but this does not detract from the set.
The two lower sections have a smooth finish and
nice clear surfaces.
