MODEL 1876 TRAPDOOR COMBINATION TOOL:
An Indian War period U.S. Army issue Model 1876 Combination
Tool for the Model 1873 Springfield Trapdoor .45/70 Carbines
and Rifles, and for the Colt and Smith and Wesson
Revolvers.
This tool, modified from the Model 1863
Springfield Combination Tool, incorporates a “U” shaped
cut which served as a mainspring clamp and the two
different sizes of screwdrivers necessary to dismount
and maintain these firearms.
The Model 1876 Combination
Tool was produced for a relatively short period, being
replaced by the more familiar Model 1879 Combination Tool,
hence the Model 1876 is less often encountered in today’s
market. This specimen is in excellent condition. See
Gun Tools, Their History and Identification, Shaffer,
Rutledge, and Dorsey, page 168 for more information. (1014)
