EARLY TIN GUNPOWDER FUNNEL FOR FILLING POWDER
HORNS – A RARE PRIMITIVE HANDMADE FUNNEL OF THE RIGHT
SIZE TO BE CARRIED IN A RIFLEMAN’S “POSSIBLE BAG” –
GREAT FRONTIER PIECE: This small tin funnel is
the sort of practical accessory, which in some form was
likely owned by every one who carried a powder horn or
flask during the era of muzzle loading firearms, that
was necessary on the frontier and which today is seldom
acknowledged, much less encountered for sale. Once
these funnels were no longer necessary, they lost any
significance and were eventually lost, discarded or were
no longer kept in association with firearms where they
would be recognized for what they are. Featuring a flat
oval cone and short, small diameter spout, this funnel
would have been used to fill a man’s powder horn from a
larger keg or can of gunpowder.
The wide mouth measures 1 ½” by ¾”, and from the lip of
the mouth to the bottom end of the tube the funnel
measures 1 3/8” – just the right size for a frontier
rifleman or mountain man to have carried in his
Possible’s Bag. Fashioned of tin with a soldered seam,
this funnel is in full form with no damage or
corrosion.
This is a scarce accessory which will display nicely
with your collection of muzzle loading firearms.
