SINGLE SHOT RIFLE WAD CUTTER - .40 CALIBER – TYPE
USED FOR RELOADING CARTRIDGES FOR THE SHARPS, REMINGTON,
AND OTHER RIFLES DURING THE BUFFALO HUNT ERA:
This wad cutter punch is of the type shown in SHARPS
FIREARMS by Frank Sellers, on page 351 (upper right
hand photograph) which were manufactured by The Sharps
Rifle Company, the Bridgeport Tool Company, and other
tool makers which were used to cut the wads incorporated
in reloading cartridges for any of the large caliber,
single shot rifles during the 1870-1890 era. An
experienced Sharps Rifle and Sharps Loading Tool
collector looked at this punch and is of the opinion
that it is a Sharps Rifle Company punch.
This wad punch is legibly stamped “.40”, with no tool
maker name. The cutter is in very good condition with
only minor wear to the blade, and only light peening to
the top, both evidence of actual use. The surface of
the steel has some minor pitting.
The type of tool which seldom survived with the rifles
and understandably they seldom appear on the market.
This would be a good piece to display with your Buffalo
range rifle.
