TRAPDOOR CARBINE BARRACKS CLEANING ROD:
An Indian War period U.S. Army issue Barracks or
Garrison Cleaning Rod for the US Springfield .45/70
Carbine. Adopted sometime between Fiscal years 1879 and
1882, this pattern of cleaning rod was determined to be
less damaging to the muzzle and bore of the rifle than
were the jointed steel rods issued with the weapon. The
total length of this rod is 29.75”, to include the 1.75”
round ball on the end. This rod is unmarked as were all
of them, and is like-new unissued condition. See Gun
Tools, Their History and Identification, Shaffer,
Rutledge, and Dorsey, page 289 for more information. A
nice Trapdoor Carbine appendage to add to your display.
