HALL CARBINE “BUCK AND
BALL” MULTI-CAVITY BULLET MOLD:
Much scarcer than the molds for the Hall Rifles, these
multi-cavity molds for the Hall Carbines are very
difficult to find. Machined to produce one .52 caliber
ball and three .31 caliber buckshot with each casting,
these balls were then used to make up the well known
“Buck and Ball” cartridges that were so lethal. Exactly
as shown in HALL’s MILITARY BREECHLOADERS by Peter A.
Schmidt, page 177, this US Army Bullet Mold was
manufactured and originally issued at a rate of one mold
for every ten carbines. Correct with the captured,
pivoting sprue cutter, this mold is stamped “NWP” for
Nahum W. Patch, an inspector at the National Armories –
Harper’s Ferry from 1822-1826 and at Springfield from
1831-1849. Overall, in excellent condition, this
mold exhibits no damage to the smooth, mold cavities, or
the sprue trimmer. The handles still retain their
original graceful curve and the metal surface of the
handles shows only minor darkening due to age and very
minor pitting. This is a very nice accoutrement to
display with your Hall Carbine and one that is almost
never encountered on the open market, quietly sold from
one private collection to disappear into another.
