ORIGINAL .54 CALIBER TOMPION – POSSIBLY
CONFEDERATE: Of a remarkably different style
than the standard .58 and .69 caliber Tompions issued in
the Federal Army, this .54 Caliber Tompion shares some
of the characteristics of other known or identified
tompions manufactured by the Confederacy (see Gun Tools,
Vol. 2, pages 284-285, by Dorsey and Shaffer).
Measuring 3 ½” long, this tompion is un-slotted and
features an elongated bulbous head. Showing little
signs of use, this tompion is in excellent condition and
may have been part of the tremendous stocks of
Confederate equipment eventually purchased by
Bannerman.
A standard appendage issued to every soldier, both
Federal and Confederate, to prevent debris and moisture
from getting into the barrel of his rifle or carbine,
.54 caliber tompions are fairly difficult to find and
this is a nice unusual specimen.
