SPRINGFIELD RIFLE BARRACKS CLEANING ROD FOR THE 1ST
& 2ND MODEL ALLIN CONVERSIONS: As
pictured and described on pages 286-287 of Gun
Tools, Their History and Identification, by Shaffer,
Rutledge, and Dorsey, this wooden cleaning rod and brush
set is believed to have been
issued for use with the Springfield 1st and 2nd
Allin Conversion Rifle Muskets.
With a design similar to the Civil War Carbine Cleaning
Rods, this rod measures 39” long with a ¾” long brass
ferrule with a threaded hole at
one end to
accept the cleaning brush. For a very
complete discussion of this rod, I would suggest you
read the passage cited above.
A fairly scarce cleaning rod and associated with the
early Indian War era conversions, this appendage would
be a nice addition to display with the other tools for
these famous Springfield arms.
