CIVIL WAR ARTILLERY PROJECTILE FUSE PACKETS –
ALLEGHENY ARSENAL - SEALED IN EXCELLENT CONDITION: These original packets of US
Artillery Timed Fuses are believed to have been produced at the
Allegheny
Arsenal and have survived in excellent condition. All
of these packets are still sealed in the original tan
colored paper wrappers with a legible ink stamped bold
stencil calling out the burning time of the fuses in
each packet, providing the gunners that information at a glance
when preparing the artillery shells for firing. The
ink stamped stencils are legible with no
loss of text. These are very attractive packets in
excellent condition to add to your condition.
I have the following packets available, each
individually listed below with accompanying photographs.

CIVIL WAR
ALLEGHENY ARSENAL 10 SECOND FUSE PACKET: An
original Civil War Artillery Shell Fuse Packet, wrapped
in brown paper with the ink stamped notation, "10.S",
indicating it contains 10 second fuses. The paper
packet is in excellent condition, appearing never to
have been opened and with the original string tie
intact. The only sign of wear or aging is a tiny
pin hole at the bottom edge of the front of the packet
where the paper has rubbed against the end of one of the
fuses. Overall, an excellent specimen.

CIVIL WAR
ALLEGHENY ARSENAL 10 SECOND FUSE PACKET: An
original Civil War Artillery Shell Fuse Packet, wrapped
in brown paper with the ink stamped notation, "12.S",
indicating it contains 12 second fuses. This paper
packet apparently fell victim to a bout of insatiable
curiosity - it was opened at sometime in the past,
exposing the ends of the fuses. All of the fuses
are intact, and the way the packet was opened has
revealed the way in which the fuses were incrementally
scored. The gunners would use a small hand saw to
trim the fuse, reducing the length of time before the
shell exploded over the target, allowing the gunner to
adjust the flight time of the shell as the battle
required. Other than having been opened, the
packet is intact and will still display well, showing
the detail of the individual fuses. (0411) $50
