1863 ORDNANCE DEPARTMENT WOOD PLANE FOR ARTILLERY LIMBER
CHEST:
Documented in the 1863 Ordnance Manual, these wood
planes were listed in the Contents of the Limber Chest
for Battery Wagon D, under the subheading of Carriage
Maker’s Tools, and each cut a different shaped molding.
This plane is made of rock maple, measures 9 3/8” long,
3 ¼” wide and 1 ½” thick, and is stamped with the name
of the contractor and inspector, and is branded as
shown, “ORD DEPT 1863”. In like new condition, with
traces of heavy dried grease on the blade, this is
relatively scarce Artillery related tool and a very
interesting Ordnance Department collectable. $175
