PAIR OF BANNERMAN’S CANDLE WALL SCONCES – MADE
FROM US ARMY SOCKET BAYONETS: Created and
assembled by the famous Bannerman Military Sales Company
in an effort to use up the tremendous stores of military
surplus they had in stock, these Candle Wall Sconces
were one of the more imaginative renderings they
produced.
Mounted on a ½” thick wooden oval plaque measuring 13”
high and 5 ¼” wide, a heavy cast brass ball socket holds
a captive Model 1873 Bayonet which has had the blade
curled into a decorative scroll. The reverse of the
plaque bears the original Bannerman paper sticker,
showing a unformed soldier and explaining the
significance and service life of the bayonet. On one
plaque this label is substantially complete with some
wear around the edges. A small remnant of the label
remains on the other plaque, but enough of the printing
is legible to confirm that it is one of Bannerman’s
original products.
These Bannerman pieces are an interesting part of the
story of the survival and marketing of collectable
militaria, and in the last few years they have all but
disappeared from the market. This pair of bayonet wall
sconces is one of the more dramatic offerings in this
line and they would make an interesting addition to your
display room.
