EARLY FORT BOWIE, ARIZONA
TERRITORY PATRIOTIC PIN CUSHION:
A little treasure that surfaced from an old estate, this
pin cushion is fashioned from pieces of flag bunting in
the form of our National Flag and bears the inked
inscription, “FORT BOWIE, A.T.”.
In the form of a pillow,
the red and white striped material is used for the body
which is stuffed to create the cushion. A small scrap of
blue material with white stars used to complete the
representation of the American flag. The stitching is
somewhat crude and hand done, and a piece of natural
sisal twine is attached to the top corners in order to
hang the cushion in a handy spot around the soldier’s
quarters. There are several old pins present in the
cushion, all showing signs of age. The pillow measures
3” long and 2” wide. The inscription was done in black
ink which has faded to brown – further testament to the
age of this piece. Somewhat soiled from age and
handling, the material is fully intact with no tears or
other damage and the material is solid with no sign of
deterioration.
Whether made by a soldier
to commemorate his assignment on the extreme edge of the
frontier, or by a spouse as she waited for her soldier
to return from a patrol, this is a special keepsake from
a very famous and historic fort.
