CIVIL WAR U.S. ARTILLERY GUNNER’S LANYARD –
EXCELLENT CONDITION: A standard implement with
every artillery piece, this Civil War era US Army
Artillery Gunner’s Lanyard has survived the years in
excellent condition, showing no signs of use or age.
The iron hook at the end of the hemp lanyard was
attached to the ring of the friction primer set in the
breech of the gun tube, and the full length 13’ cord
allowed the gunner to stand clear of the recoil path
when the gun was fired.
The turned cylindrical wooden handle measures 4 ˝" long
and 1” in diameter at the center of the handle. The
hemp cord – or “cod line” as it was named in the 1863
Ordnance Manual – is full length with no weak points,
and the original iron hook is intact on the end of the
cord in its original back-spliced loop. The handle
has a small chip missing on one end knob, but this
Lanyard is in otherwise excellent, “like new” condition, and
will be a very nice addition to your Civil War
collection.
