CIVIL WAR ARTILLERY GUNNER’S GIMLET OR VENT PICK –
WATERVLIET ARSENAL STAMPED – EXCELLENT CONDITION:
As described in the 1863 Ordnance Manual, this original
Civil War Artillery Gunner’s Gimlet, also known as a
Vent Pick, is in excellent condition and is stamped
“WATERVLIET US 8 R M 88” indicating it was manufactured
at Watervliet Arsenal. The loop measures the proper 2”
in diameter and the overall length is 20”. The pick end
is twisted with a sharpened edge as you would find on a
drill bit. This implement retains the majority of the
original arsenal applied blue finish without any
corrosion or pitting. It would be difficult to upgrade
this excellent Civil War Artillery implement.
