1850-1890’s US ARMY TOOL CHEST – TYPE USED BY POST
QUARTERMASTERS, ORDNANCE SERGEANTS, WAGONERS AND
ARTILLERY ARTIFICERS TO SECURE THEIR TOOLS – GREAT
DISPLAY PIECE: This US Army Tool Chest was
discovered in central Texas, still being used for its
original purpose on a small ranch. Based on the style
of construction, size and the color of the original
paint, this tool chest is the type to have been used by
US Army Quartermasters, Ordnance Sergeants and
Technicians, Wagoners, and Artillery Artificers in the
shops on the frontier posts and on campaign during the
mid to late 19TH Century.
A relatively scarce survivor of the Civil War and the
early Indian Wars period, the chest is very solid and
retains the original lid. Measuring 20 ¾” long, 12 ¾”
wide and 10” tall, the exterior of the chest retains the
majority of the original blue/green paint unique to the
19TH Century army. All of the seams are
tight, with no splits, cracks or other damage to the
wood, and the workmanship in the construction of the
chest is very well done. The lid is securely attached
with the original iron hinges and sliding support arm,
and the original iron lock is still in place on the face
of the chest with the engaging pins present, inlet into
the lid. The original sliding parts tray is present,
and like the chest, is solid and full form. The front
face of the chest is stenciled with a legible “US” in
black paint.
Not only an attractive display piece, this chest is also
very utilitarian for the collector whether in your
collection at home or on the road setting up a display.
The chest will hold all those loose pieces, display
fixtures, and gun cleaning supplies and tools for
maintaining your collection.
These tool chests were used in hard environments and are
rarely found in collections. This particular piece has
survived in very nice condition from a very desirable
and historic era.
