CABINET CARD DEPICTING AN INDIAN WOMAN IN A
HORNED BONNET HOLDING A WINCHESTER RIFLE:
This is a wonderful old studio image of a Native
American Woman dressed in a beautiful elk tooth dress,
wearing a buffalo horned and feathered bonnet and
holding a Winchester rifle. The style of the dress
suggests she may be from the Southern Plains – Comanche,
Kiowa or Southern Cheyenne – and the bonnet she is
wearing might well have been her husband’s.
Measuring 6”
by 2”, this was originally printed in these dimensions
and is not a cut down portion of a larger image – the
finished edge is visible all the way around the card.
There is a hand written legend in pencil on the reverse
“half Indian & white”, assuming to refer to the woman in
the image. The image is clear with no fading or damage
and it is in overall excellent condition.
A rare subject
content, this armed Native American woman is dressed to
the nines and her presence and stature is very evident,
which combined with the Winchester rifle creates a very
unusual and collectable image. (C0087) $550
