CIVIL WAR CARTE DE VISTE – CAVALRY OFFICER –
BOSTON PHOTOGRAPHER: This cavalry officer
strikes a formal pose, clothed in his dress uniform
frock coat with the gold bullion epaulets, and wearing
his sabre belt over the officer’s red sash, with his
officer’s cavalry sabre well displayed on his left hip.
I suspect this image was taken early in the Civil War
given the dress uniform – by war’s end these uniforms
were less common in the images, having been replaced by
the more practical field grade uniforms. The reverse of
the CDV bears the name of the photographer, “J. W.
Black, Washington Street, Boston”. This CDV, measuring
4” by 2 3/8”, is in very good to excellent condition,
with no edge wear or damage and no bends or damage to
the corners.
